about multi vitamins for dogs
Should i give my pregnant dog a multi vitamin?

I have a pregnant dog. I have asked two different vets whether or not i should give a multi vitamin to her. one vet said i should start to give her a multi vitamin at 5 weeks of pregnancy. the other vet said no that when you give a pregnant dog a multi vitamin it could make them hypoglycemic. i have no idea what to do i have two vets telling me two totally different things. if someone has any advice i would appreciate it.

We recommend that you not give a pregnant dog any vitamin supplement because you can never be sure how the ingredients will affect the developing pups. Instead, make sure her diet is as good as you can make it. Add fresh veggies and fruit for trace minerals and vitatims, and meat for extra protien. Do NOT give her milk or calcium supplements. Her body is already generating enough calcium, and if you give her too much it can adversely affect her pups.

Good nutrition is the main protection against the disease in dogs and cats. Feed a high quality food for dogs or cats will keep your pet healthy and in good condition throughout its life

How do you know this dog / cat food is right? For many, the choice is a homemade diet. If you have time and resources, I agree that this is the best way to go. This is usually the best, and sometimes the only choice for animals suffering from multiple food allergies. The choice is yours whether to go raw or cooked, with or without bones.

Basically, a homemade diet should be composed of 40-60% meat for dogs, 60% -90% for cats, 20-50% vegetables (dogs, or 10% -40% for cats), and the rest, possibly, grains. The choice within each category is large and depends on your budget, availability, and the dog or cat prefers. Food allergies dictate which is often used.

Each dog and cat is unique and what is best for one may not work well for another. Feeding a variety of foods is the best way to provide all or most of the nutrients needed by your pet.

A good quality multi-vitamins and calcium supplements help make sure that power is complete. Because it can be difficult to get the right balance of calcium and phosphorus in making your own feed, you will need to add a calcium supplement.

If you like the idea of food for pets home but lack the time, there are pre-mixes available or complete, ready to serve meals. Premixes are dried, dehydrated or frozen. Usually, they are cereals and mixtures of vegetables and some supplements such as calcium, to which you add the meat. Minced meat, sometimes with bones, are also available, where food for pets are sold. You can add your own vegetables and / or cereal if you wish.

Complete raw diets are sold frozen, dried or lyophilized. Some areas are in May local contractors who manufacture and sell these plans cost. They may also make meals to your specifications pets.

If you prefer to feed a commercial product, choose one of the premium dog foods now available. although the cost may be higher than store brands grocery, which allows you to save costs of veterinarians will more than offset the difference.

Whether for food canned or dry pet food depends on you and your dog or cat. Canned food is generally more expensive kibble is more convenient. Animals prefer usually canned foods and some need the softer consistency and more humid. Canned pet foods usually contain protein quality that dry pet food, and a higher percentage of protein and fat. The water content higher in canned foods may be beneficial to dogs and cats with urinary tract or kidney problems. The dry pet food contains more preservatives. Some people choose to use both.

The most important criteria in choosing a food for pets is a list of ingredients. Whole meat are always better then the meat meal and meat meal are preferable to by-products. Meals single source, such as meat meal or a meal of chicken are healthier than meat or simple meals marked poultry. Single source meals contain meat of this animal muscles and tissues accompanying as nerves, blood vessels and skin. Generic May meal containing tissues of other organs and fatty tissues. Flour by-product is a catch-all for everything what does not fit the definitions other meals – avoid at all costs!

Seeking the source of meat (or sources) to be listed first on the label. If the grains are included (they are still nuggets), they should be whole grains, rather as fractions, such as wheat bran, rice, etc. Beware of multiple listings of grain, they add in May for only the portion of meat!

Avoid Foods containing artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The colors are added for your benefit, not to appeal to dogs. Aromas artificial is added to improve palatability or cover the taste out of quality ingredients poorest. Most food stores natural and holistic supply stores pet carry premium brands of food for pets. If you are unable to find a good dog food in stores near you, many of them can be found on the Internet.
